The approved method we use to protective raise monarchs starting rearing in May, June, up to July 15th takes approximately 15 minutes  of involvement every few days  for  30 days to complete. The monarchs will move through  their development stages on their own as long as you supply them with  milkweed stems as described  in the videos below. We ask you not to START  raising monarchs  after July 15th so the fourth "migration to Mexico" generation of monarchs develop in the wild to assure they have all the unique traits needed to survive the long trip.

🌾 STEP 3: The Challenge (May/June) Net a wild monarch and check if it is a female. Search: What's the difference between a male and female monarch butterfly"
Test her for OE (Google "Butterfly-Lady What is OE" for instructions).
If healthy, place her in a clean hatchery wto lay approximately 60 eggs, then rotate her to your second hatchery for another 60 eggs before releasing her.
Find  75–100 stems of 2.5-foot common milkweed They are 2.5 feet tall everywhere in the Midwest and  NortJune 1st (approx. 45 stems per hatchery).

If you want to raise more than 100 monarchs you can move your egg laying female to a 3rd and 4th hatchery before you release her.
Keep your total to under 250 healthy monarchs per season, per USFWS guidelines.
📢 Spread the Word!

Copy and paste this message to your timeline with a beautiful photo of a monarch. Networking works—thank you for helping save the monarchs!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

9) We net monarchs we see and we see laying eggs on common milkweed . We carefully put her in an envelope to transport her to our new or SANITIZED Restcloud 2' x 2' x 3' popup hatchery habitat.

10) After netting a female monarch, harvesting 2.5 foot stems of milkweed is the most important step to raising monarchs. In less than a week that milkweed plant will recover and start  to grow another stem.

11) We  harvest 2.5 foot healthy green common milkweed stems growing in our yards, growing along roadsides, in parks, vacant lots, and open areas  throughout the Southern U S in April.

and Throughout the continental U S and Southern Canada  in May, June, and July. Stems of common milkweed are 2.5 feet tall everywhere in the monarchs summer breeding grounds on June 1st.

12) Please view the link below to the following video demonstrating how to harvest common milkweed, immediately split the stem with scissors, and pull off the leaves from the bottom up until there are no leaves on the stem that will be in the water in a  one gallon milk jug  full of water.

https://youtu.be/fJXMEjdwgEo?si=Ui5DKv9wlo-XKSzs

13) Rinse the milkweed and you will trim and split the bottom of the stems  and to keep it fresh immediately put 4-5 stems in the jug until they fit tight so the milkweed stems stand almost straight up imitating a bouquet of flowers,  The following link is a video of demonstrating  harvesting common milkweed  https://youtu.be/fJXMEjdwgEo?si=Ui5DKv9wlo-XKSzs

  14) We have our butterfly nets with us to net a female monarch we see laying eggs or just landing on flowers. We net and put her in an envelope to take her home with us.  We check her for OE by going to the following link so the Butterfly Lady can explain  how to check her. https://butterfly-lady.com/what-is-oe/

15) Along with 100's of Thousands of citizen scientists , this is when we start doing our part to increase the monarch butterfly migration population exponentially !

16) Our programs, website tutorials, and educational groups are 100% FREE OF CHARGE. We do not charge membership dues, we do not accept donations, and we do not profit from any of the standard equipment we recommend. We do this out of pure love for the monarchs and our goal is to contribute to everyone seeing lots more monarchs everyday everywhere from the late spring until October when we see millions of them migrating through our towns and cities on their way to Mexico.

17) We are dedicated to restoring the beauty of our North American landscapes by planting and propagating pollinator plants and nectar rich flowers to share with others to plant in their yards, parks, and all  landscapes throughout North America . [1, 2, 3]🗒️

20) 📈 Section 3: The  Continental Strategy🏹 How We Will Double and Triple the 2027 Population

  • 21) Zone 1:  When the monarchs return north from overwintering in the mountains of Mexico in April, they lay eggs in Texas, and other Southern states  where milkweed has began to grow.
  • 22) 100's of Thousands of our newly recruited and veteran monarch conservation citizen scientists living on the Southern front of monarch conservation where the expansion of the monarch migration population in North America begins, will go out  and net a female monarch they see laying eggs on their local milkweed.  They will check her for OE by using the video protocol  search Google, " BUTTERFLY_LADY What is OE".

Check out the map  linked here to see when adult monarchs were sighted in your area in the spring of 2026 to get an idea when they will get to your area this season: https://maps.journeynorth.org/map/?year=2026&map=monarch-adult-first

  • 23) Our army of veterans and new trained recruits will begin the procedure shown and described below to multiply the migration through protecting the developing monarchs until they are adults and can fly away and breed, lay eggs, and die. They've done their job !!!.
  • Their multiplied offspring  will develop into adults in about a month and migrate to the summer breeding grounds of the Midwest, Northeast, and Canada in May and June to breed and lay their eggs and die.
  • The second generation will have grown in numbers exponentially in numbers from the first generation.

Zone 2: The Northern Breeding Grounds (The Summer Expansion): The healthy, parasite-free offspring of our South Texas and Southern states frontline fly north in May to seed the summer breeding grounds.  Be sure to check the first adults sightings in the summer breeding grounds by again reviewing the map linked here: https://maps.journeynorth.org/map/?year=2026&map=monarch-adult-firstThere,

Our northern veterans and new members will utilize our specialized harvesting techniques to secure local wild common milkweed stems, safely secure egg-laying females, and run clean, high-yield hatcheries that scale and multiply our impact on the monarch migration population. The migration starts to multiply exponentially !!!

⚖️ [Section 4: Federal Regulations & The USFWS 4(D) Rule]📜 Understanding the Law: Safe Small-Scale Rearing for Conservation,  Many members ask about the legalities of gathering and protective rearing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has established clear guidelines under the monarch listing 4(D) rule:

  • The 250-Limit Rule: The USFWS has officially concluded that collecting, possessing, captively rearing, and releasing fewer than 250 individual monarchs per location or facility per year (such as your home, a school, Nature Center, or a local business) does not negatively affect conservation recovery efforts.

  • Our exclusive proven method of protecting monarchs perfected by our founder has been studied, tested, and approved  by U S  Fish and Wildllife biologists,  The method protects monarch eggs as they are developing until they are adults, testing them for OE (explained by Google search: Butterfly-Lady What is OE") https://butterfly-lady.com/what-is-oe/  and released .  This method  adds  tremendous numbers of healthy monarchs to the monarch migration population  that wouldn't have existed without our intervention.  This procedure also adds to the monarchs necessary predator populations all the way up the wildlife food chain until it adds one out of three bites of our food to our diet through pollination.

  • Permit Thresholds: It has been suppested, If you handle more than 250 monarchs in a single year, you must apply for a standard federal permit through the USFWS.  (This rule hasn't been implemented at this time. There is presently no limit to the number of healthy monarchs you are allowed to raise and release.

  • Regional Variances: In Canada, residents are limited to protective rearing of up to 60 monarchs per season per person, which requires a localized permit.  You are legally able to raise 250+ Monarchs in every state in the U S except California.[1, 2, 3, 4]

🔎 [Section 5: Scientific Validation – Why Protective Rearing is Essential]🔬 The Core Problem: 95%+ Predator Mortality in the Wild

Why do we step in? In nature, over 95% of all monarch eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalises are destroyed by " necessary" predators before they ever have a chance to become butterflies, fly away, or reproduce. [1]

When we protective rear monarch butterflies, that wouldn't have existed without our help, we also add predators to their populations that feed the wildlife food chain and add 1 out of 3 bites of food to our diets.

PROTECTED REARING OF MONARCH BUTTERFLIES IS A WIN ! WIN! WIN !

  • The Invasive Fire Ant Crisis: Peer-reviewed research from the University of Texas at San Antonio has proven that the imported, invasive red fire ant alone consumes 87% of vulnerable early-stage monarch larvae across Texas, California, and the Southern states.
  • The Winter Firewall: Invasive fire ants cannot survive in northern climates that experience long, extended winter freezes. We raise our monarchs indoors in the summer breeding grounds where these unnatural predators don't and can't exist. [1, 2]

📚 Peer-Reviewed Research Links We base our methodologies strictly on peer-reviewed science. Explore the studies that validate our protective rearing and conservation models:

  1. The Milkweed Paradox Study (Oikos Journal): https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2016/04/beyond-milkweed-monarchs-face-habitat-nectar-threats Demonstrates that a simple lack of milkweed on the summer breeding landscape is not a driving factor of the eastern monarch decline.  There is an oversupply of common milkweed on the landscape of North America.  You need to locate your own supply of common milkweed in your area and/or plant common milkweed in your yard in an area where you don't mind if it spreads. It takes 13 large leaves of common milkweed to rear 1 monarch  to the adult in-flight stage ready for release.  The following is the link to a video  that shows how to harvest stems of common milkweed to transport home:
  2. Entomology Today Analysis: Explores why top scientists conclude that migration survival factors outweigh basic milkweed counts.
  3. The Dr. David James Citizen Science Study: Landmark research tracking nearly 14,000 reared butterflies, proving that indoor-protected monarchs successfully navigate the long-distance migration routes to their overwintering grounds.
  4. Larval Predator Impact Study (Nature): Scientific proof that structural predators (ants, wasps, spiders) create a 95%+ mortality baseline in open fields.
  5. Navigation & Orientation Ability Study (Conservation Physiology): Confirms that indoor-reared monarchs retain full physical traits and flight orientation systems required to fly to Mexico. [1, 2, 3, 4]

34) There's a lot left to learn in this CHAPTER 1 page you're on now. You may not know about why we are protective rearing, we will explain below.

35)  WE HAVE CHOSEN THIS PAGE TO LINK PEER REVIEWED SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND STUDIES THAT SUPPORT WHAT WE PRACTICE AND TEACH ON THIS WEBSITE:  PLEASE READ ON.

36) IF YOU WANT TO BE A SERIOUS MONARCH BUTTERFLY CONSERVATIONIST AND EDUCATOR YOU WILL NEED TO STUDY THESE LINKS BELOW AND OPEN ALL THE REFERENCES IN THESE  RESEARCH STUDIES SO YOU CAN STUDY ALL THE RESEARCH.

37) IF YOU"RE AN EXPERIENCED MONARCH CONSERVATIONIST AND HAVE PRACTICED PROTECTED REARING MONARCH BUTTERFLIES  AND STUDIED THIS PAGE

38) THIS  LINK WILL TAKE YOU TO THE PAGE ON THIS WEBSITE THAT WILL TEACH YOU HOW TO USE THE MOST NATURAL METHOD

https://craigthebutterflyman.com/raise-monarchs-1

39) It has been determined by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service that the monarch butterfly population and it's  spectacular migration occurring yearly involving the United States, Canada, and Mexico is threatened and endangered. 95+% of all monarch eggs, caterpillars, and chrysalis are consumed by increasing numbers of natural and unnatural  predators before they become butterflies and are able to fly away, protect themselves, and reproduce.

40)  THIS WEBSITE IS DESIGNED TO BE EDUCATIONAL

PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME TO READ AND STUDY THE TEXT  AND OPEN AND STUDY THE LINKS

41) YOU CAN HELP MONARCH BUTTERFLIES IN 2 WAYS;

42) 1) PLANT THE PLANTS THEY NEED TO LIVE AND THRIVE ON

43)  WE TEACH YOU HOW TO PROTECT THE VULNERABLE  EARLY STAGES OF THE MONARCHS  DEVELOPMENT EARLY IN THE MIGRATION SEASON STARTING PROTECTING EGGS NO LATER THAN JULY 15th IF POSSIBLE SO THE NEXT GENERATION THAT NEEDS TO MIGRATE TO MEXICO DEVELOPS IN THE WILD SO THEY HAVE ALL THE TRAITS REQUIRED TO MAKE THE TRIP TO MEXICO, OVERWINTER, AND RETURN TO TEXAS TO LAY EGGS TO START THE MIGRATION ALL OVER AGAIN

44) WE SEPARATE MONARCHS FROM PREDATORS INDOORS IN A NETTED POP UP HATCHERY HABITAT ON A TABLE NEAR A WINDOW UNTIL THEY ARE ADULT BUTTERFLIES AND WE CHECK THEM FOR DISEASE,  SO THEY CAN FLY AWAY FROM PREDATORS USING THIS PROTOCOL..

http://butterfly-lady.com/what-is-oe/

45) IN THE WILD, AFTER THEY ARE RELEASED,  THEY REPRODUCE AND CREATE MORE MONARCHS THAT WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT OUR HELP THEREFORE INCREASING THE MONARCH MIGRATION POPULATION.

46) PLEASE  TAKE YOUR TIME AND READ THIS "HOME" PAGE AND THE OTHER PAGES  LINKED ABOVE: "LEADERS",  "GROUPS/GALLERY",  "RAISE MONARCHS",  "LEADERS PROGRAM" "VIDEOS"  "CONTACT".  PLEASE OPEN ALL THE LINKS AND STUDY THEM. Don't forget to study under the "MORE" dropdown "RESTORING THE MIGRATION" chapter.

47)  DO THIS AND YOU WILL BE A WELL EDUCATED MONARCH BUTTERFLY CONSERVATIONIST.

48)  YOU WILL KNOW HOW TO HELP YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY GET INVOLVED THROUGH SHARING THIS WEBSITE WITH THEM AND DISCUSSING THE CONTENT AND WORKING  TOGETHER WITH THEM TO DO THE THINGS TAUGHT HERE THAT WILL HELP US ALL HAVE A MORE BEAUTIFUL LANDSCAPE WITH MORE MONARCHS AND POLLINATORS  TO ENJOY .

49)

49) Many monarch butterfly scientists have contributed to the following research and study that shows lack of milkweed on the landscape of the monarchs summer breeding grounds is not the main reason the monarchs eastern range migration in North America is declining.

https://nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/oik.03196

50) The following is a link to an article in Entomolgy today that explains why top monarch scientists believe milkweed is not the determining factor in the monarch migration decline.

https://entomologytoday.org/2016/04/29/lack-of-milkweed-is-not-harming-monarch-butterfly-populations-new-research-suggests/

53) Below is the abstract of a study by top rated monarch butterfly scientist Dr David James and his wife Tanya supporting protecting monarch eggs until they are adult butterflies and releasing them to help increase the spectacular monarch migration

54) The study is referenced and acclaimed in the following publication

https://ucanr.edu/blogs/blogcore/postdetail.cfm?postnum=27559

The complete study is linked here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vRWl-WILi0ndaQOJOkHKcg_sDZuAhwMDRAz0YiwbezLEosgzjXCAxtKu0hRghAhEZnx1qluGywcgP07/pub?fbclid=IwAR1LZdwGqvA-klgcCVpk3X-Kjg--Oc9BBornMhTeGBdvv8irCySX6xkZzPU

55) ABSTRACT for the above study: The fall migration of Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) was studied in an unfunded citizen science project during 2012–16 by tagging 13778 reared and 875 wild Monarchs. More than a third of these Monarchs were reared by inmates of the Washington State Penitentiary (WSP) in Walla Walla, Washington. Sixty (0.41 %) tagged Monarchs were recovered from distances greater than 10 km (mean: 792.9 ± 48.0 km) with most found in California, SSW of release points. One WSP-reared Monarch was found 724 km to the SE in Utah. Monarchs tagged in Oregon flew SSE to California. No Idaho-tagged Monarchs were found in California but two were recovered at locations due south. No wild tagged Monarchs from Washington, Oregon or Idaho were recovered. Monarchs from Washington and Oregon were found during October-February at 24 coastal California overwintering sites spanning 515 km from Bolinas to Carpinteria. A single wild spring Monarch tagged in May in northern California was recovered 35 days later and 707 km ENE in Twin Falls, Idaho. This study provides compelling evidence that many Monarchs in southern and central parts of Washington and Oregon migrate south in the fall to overwintering sites along the California coast. It also provides some evidence for southerly and south-easterly vectoring of migrating Monarchs from eastern Washington and Idaho, indicating the possibility of migration to Arizona or Mexico overwintering sites. In addition to improving our understanding of Monarch migration in the PNW, this study also contributed to conservation by adding nearly 14000 butterflies to the population. The incredible involvement of incarcerated and non-incarcerated citizen scientists generated much community and media interest which in turn led to greater involvement by citizens. Increased awareness of Monarchs, their biology and conservation in the PNW has been an unexpected but important spin-off of this study.

56) THIS IS A PEER REVIEWED SCIENTIFIC STUDY AND  RESEARCH DEMONSTRATING NATURAL AND UNNATURAL PREDATORS ARE THE NUMBER ONE KILLER OF MONARCHS KILLING OVER 95%+ WHILE THEY ARE DEVELOPING THROUGH THEIR VULNERABLE EARLY STAGES  UNTIL THEY ARE ADULTS AND CAN FLY AWAY FROM DANGER.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-50737-5

57) NATURAL MONARCH BUTTERFLY PREDATORS INCLUDING ANTS, WASPS,  AND SPIDERS ARE ALSO NECESSARY IN THE WILDLIFE FOOD CHAIN.

58) THE MORE MONARCHS WE PROTECT AND RELEASE THE MORE THE ENTIRE WILDLIFE FOOD CHAIN BENEFITS

59) THE IMPORTED INVASIVE RED FIRE ANT HAS BEEN STUDIED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT SAN ANTONIO AND PROVEN TO CONSUME  87% OF THE VULNERABLE EARLY DEVELOPMENT STAGES OF

MONARCH BUTTERFLIES. LEARN ABOUT THESE UNNATURAL PREDATORS HERE: https://youtu.be/R7pEAUUqmM0?si=EofO6CvLn51w_TGk

60) IMPORTED INVASIVE RED  FIRE ANTS ARE PRESENT AND ACTIVE IN MOST OF THE STATE OF TEXAS, ALL OF THE SOUTHERN STATES, AND CALIFORNIA. WHEN MONARCHS RETURN FROM MEXICO IN THE SPRING AND LAY EGGS.  THESE FIRE ANTS ARE PRESENT THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH AND CALIFORNIA.

https://youtu.be/8DmnM_oFNx8?si=1YEgv6LJi2ydh91z

61) THESE FIRE ANTS CAN"T SURVIVE IN CLIMATES WHERE THERE ARE EXTENDED FREEZES ! THIS IS WHY WE PROTECT EGGS WHERE THERE ARE  LONG PERIODS OF FREEZING TEMPERATURES.

62) WE INTERVENE AND TAKE MONARCH EGGS OUT OF THE WILDLIFE FOOD CHAIN AND PROTECT THEM FROM THESE PREDATORS INDOORS DURING THEIR EARLY VULNERABLE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT UNTIL WE RELEASE THEM BACK INTO THE WILD AS ADULT BUTTERFLIES THAT WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT OUR HELP PROTECTING THEM.

63) THE DEVELOPMENT  STAGES OF "THEIR"  OFFSPRING WILL DEVELOP IN THE WILD , SOME OF THEM WILL FEED THE WILDLIFE FOOD CHAIN ,AND  SOME WILL BECOME ADULT BUTTERFLIES INCREASING THE MIGRATION WITH EVEN MORE BUTTERFLIES THAT WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT US HELPING THEIR PREVIOUS GENERATION  SURVIVE.

64) OUR EFFORTS HAVE HELPED MONARCHS CONTINUE TO MULTIPLY IN THE WILD !!!

65) There have been discussions about whether healthy monarchs, protected from predators during their vulnerable stages of development when released, have the strength and  durability to migrate to Mexico  to overwinter in the mountains.  The following scientific research demonstrates monarchs that develop indoors have the ability to orient towards Mexico when released, able to migrate the long distances, as well as add to the migration population.

76) YOU MAY WANT TO HELP  MONARCHS THROUGH PLANTING THE HABITAT THEY NEED TO THRIVE ON IN YOUR YARD, ON YOUR PATIO, AND/OR EASILY INTERVENE AND PROTECT MONARCHS FROM THEIR 450+ PREDATORS OUT IN THE WILD AND BRING THEM INDOORS UNTIL THEY ARE

HEALTHY MONARCHS READY FOR RELEASE,.

77) YOU CAN WATCH THEIR VULNERABLE STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT  UNTIL THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL ADULT BUTTERFLIES AND YOU CAN RELEASE THEM SO THEY CAN PROTECT THEMSELVES BY FLYING AWAY FROM DANGER OUTSIDE.  THIS IS A ONE MINUTE TIME-LAPSE VIDEO  SHOWING THE MONARCHS STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVm5k99PnBk

78) WHAT WE TEACH YOU DOESN'T COST ANYTHING . AS YOU SAW ABOVE.  MONARCHS DEVELOP INTO ADULT BUTTERFLIES  ON THEIR OWN IN THE WILD. WHAT YOU DIDN'T SEE IS OVER 95+%, ALMOST ALL OF THEM, DON"T MAKE IT FROM THAT EGG TO THAT BEAUTIFUL ADULT STAGE  BECAUSE ANTS, WASPS, AND SPIDERS CONSUME THEM.

79) WE TEACH YOU TO BRING MONARCH EGGS INDOORS SO THEY WILL  BE IN A CONTROLLED  ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY CAN DEVELOP THROUGH THEIR LIFE STAGES IN SAFETY WITHOUT BEING IN DANGER OF BEING CONSUMED BY THE PREDATORS WHO CONSUME THEM OUTDOORS.

80) ONCE YOU EASILY SET UP THIS SIMPLE ENVIRONMENT INDOORS ON A SMALL TABLE NEAR A WINDOW, YOU INTRODUCE THE EGGS ON MILKWEED PLANT LEAVES ON THE STEM, AND WATCH THEM DEVELOP THROUGH THEIR LIFE STAGES .YOU DON'T EVEN TOUCH THEM USING THE MOST NATURAL SCIENTIST APPROVED METHOD POSSIBLE SHOWN BELOW.

https://craigthebutterflyman.com/raise-monarchs-1

81) YOU GET TO WATCH THE MIRACLE OF THE MONARCHS METAMORPHOSIS AS THEY PROGRESS THROUGH THEIR VULNERABLE LIFE STAGES AND EMERGE AS A  HEALTHY BUTTERFLY, LET THEIR WINGS DRY FOR 24 HOURS AND YOU RELEASE THEM OUTDOORS INTO NATURE SO THEY CAN FULFILL THEIR DUTY OF POLLINATING PLANTS AND REPRODUCING MORE MONARCHS IN THE WILD THAT WOULDN'T HAVE EXISTED WITHOUT YOUR HELP.   .

82) WE ARE AN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY OF 100's OF THOUSANDS OF REGULAR CITIZENS THAT PARTICIPATE IN EVERY CITY AND TOWN IN NORTH AMERICAN WHEREVER MONARCHS LIVE TEACHING OTHERS HOW TO HELP CONSERVE AND INCREASE THE INCREDIBLE MONARCH BUTTERFLY MIGRATION.
